Madrid are reportedly willing to trigger their €8 million option to buy Paz back from Como this summer, but the player is not ready to leave Serie A. According to , Paz believes it will be easier for him to reach his true potential at Como with guaranteed playing time under the management of Cesc Fabregas. After Madrid's signing of Franco Mastantuono from River Plate, Paz feels it would have been difficult to garner minutes under Los Blancos' coach Xabi Alonso.

Arda Guler and Mastantuono are being groomed to lead the midfield with Luka Modric heading to AC Milan, while Aurelien Tchouameni is still in contention for a place in the starting XI. The competition for a place concerns 20-year-old Paz, who plays a vital role under Fabregas. After a wonderful season with Como, the Argentine midfielder wants to build on it and refine his skills and playing style further this year.

Como have built a good project under Fabregas and have further intensified their race for a top finish in the Italian league by adding the likes of Jesus Rodriguez from Real Betis and Croatian talent Martin Baturina from Dinamo Zagreb. This strong, developing environment provides the ideal setting for Paz to continue his progress, meaning that while a return to Bernabeu remains a future goal, now is not the perfect time.

David Willey considered missing World Cup

Being overlooked for central contract left retiring bowler feeling like “a third wheel” on tournament eve

Harmison: England squad for WI will have fresh faces

David Willey signed off from his international career by taking his 100th ODI wicket in England’s win over Pakistan in Kolkata – then revealed he had considered pulling out of the World Cup as late as the day that the team flew to India at the end of September.Willey announced before England’s defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad last week that he would quit international cricket after this tournament at the age of 33. He was told in September that he had not been offered a central contract for 2023-24, then learned that he was the only member of the World Cup squad without an offer. He was incensed, and soon decided that he was no longer interested in feeling like “a third wheel” as a fringe player. He said that constant uncertainty over his schedule had taken its toll on him, his wife and their two children, and has therefore opted to “take control”.Related

Willey started the World Cup running the drinks for England but replaced Sam Curran for their fourth match, a 229-run loss to South Africa in Mumbai, and has played every game since. He finished the tournament with 11 wickets at 23.54, second only to Adil Rashid in England’s squad, and signed off with 3 for 56 in his 10 overs.”It was mixed emotions,” Willey said. “My time is done… but it’s with deep regret. Anybody looking in has probably looked at the way I’ve gone about my business and [seen that I am] probably playing the best cricket of my career. I’m 33, as fit as I’ve ever been.”One of the reasons that I wasn’t offered a contract was them going in a different direction after the World Cup – I don’t know why [they are]. It’s been a period for some time now… not knowing quite where I stand with England and it’s just taken its toll, and becomes very tiring.”David Willey was Player of the Match in his international swansong•AFP/Getty ImagesWilley believes he would have been able to play a valuable role for England at the T20 World Cup next June, had he been offered a contract. “[If there is] an injury or two, they’re going to be calling on someone with very little to no experience in World Cups,” he said.”Never say never, but right now, I’m very confident [in] my decision that today was my last game of cricket for England. Do I want to go to the Caribbean and run drinks, and not know where I stand, and just feel like a third wheel again – which is very much what I felt like when I turned up at Lord’s, being the only one without a contract? Probably not, so I’m done.”Willey said he had doubts over whether he should travel to India after learning that he was the only squad member without a central contract: “I wasn’t sure whether I was going to come to the World Cup, even to the 11th hour. The morning that we were joining up at Lord’s, I still wasn’t sure whether I’d make the trip or not.”He added: “From then on, it [retirement] was something that was on my mind. It’s not just that I haven’t been offered a contract; it’s how I feel valued as an England player, when I look down that list of other guys that have got contracts… I came to the decision that the time was right for me to call it a day.”Willey removed both Pakistan openers – Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman – in his new-ball spell on Saturday, then returned to have Agha Salman caught at mid-on to become the 15th Englishman to reach 100 ODI wickets. He also became the second England men’s player after Alastair Cook to win the Player of the Match award in his final international appearance.”On the phone to my wife this morning, she said, ‘Go on – just get to 100 wickets. It’d be a nice way to finish,'” he said. “To do that was a nice way for me personally [to sign off].”He said he wanted to leave international cricket on his own terms, and hoped that he had proved Rob Key – who, as managing director, was ultimately responsible for central contract offers – wrong. “Keysy said to me, ‘I hope you can prove me wrong.’ Maybe I’ve done it over the last few games,” Willey said.”The timing [of his retirement announcement], people may have looked at it and frowned upon my timing there. But for me personally, there’s not many opportunities you get to walk away from [international] cricket on your terms, and I wanted to really enjoy my last three games of cricket [for England] and play without looking over my shoulder, thinking, ‘One bad performance and I’m out of the side.'”Willey will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket. He captains Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast and has a contract with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders for the ILT20 in January-February. He is also likely to be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and by Welsh Fire in the Hundred.

Pakistan's tour of Netherlands in 2024 postponed indefinitely at PCB's request

Pakistan’s tour of the Netherlands in 2024 has been postponed indefinitely at the PCB’s request.Pakistan were scheduled to play three T20Is against Netherlands in early May 2024 as part of a tour of Europe that also included three T20Is against Ireland, and four against England. All those games were scheduled in the build-up to the T20 World Cup which starts in June 2024, to be held in the West Indies and USA.Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Board (KNCB)’s high-performance manager Roland Lefebvre confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the tour had been put off, with the PCB citing scheduling clashes, and concerns about player workload.”The KNCB understands the predicament the PCB are in, given the busy playing schedules and at the same time keeping the well-being of players in mind,” Lefebvre said. “We value the good relationship we have with the PCB, and look forward to rescheduling this series to a later date.”The postponement will come as a blow for Netherlands, who were scheduled to get three T20Is against a Full-Member side in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup, for which they have already qualified. That also means Netherlands and Pakistan are yet to face each other in a bilateral T20I fixture, with their only two meetings in the format having come at the T20 World Cup.In fact, there was significant on-field bonhomie between the Pakistan and Netherlands players after their fates were tied together at last year’s T20 World Cup, with each side doing the other a favour. Netherlands beat South Africa to keep Pakistan alive in a tournament that saw them go on to reach the final, while Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in the following game to ensure direct qualification to the 2024 T20 World Cup for Netherlands.Last year, Netherlands had hosted Pakistan for three ODIs as part of the Super League. Pakistan went on to win the series 3-0, but two of those matches were decided by margins of only 16 runs and nine runs. The PCB acknowledged to ESPNcricinfo that next year’s series had been postponed at their request, and said they were actively working on finding an alternate window.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gimenez joined Milan in January from Feyenoord for €32 million (£27m/$35m) plus €3m in bonuses. Despite netting six goals and providing three assists in 19 appearances in the second half of the season, questions over his future surfaced amid Milan's plans to sign a new striker this summer. However, the 24-year-old remains focused on making an impact in Serie A after helping Mexico win the Gold Cup at NRG Stadium.

  • WHAT GIMENEZ SAID

Gimenez told the reporters: "I feel at home at Milan, I'm living a dream, I'm grateful for the opportunity to be in a team like Milan. There have been rumours of a possible farewell but I'm fine. I spoke with the management and the staff, the idea is to stay. I'll try to give my best, I don't want to waste this opportunity."

    WHAT NEXT FOR AC MILAN?

Milan resume pre-season training this week, with Massimiliano Allegri expected to evaluate the squad ahead of potential signings. While the club remain interested in reinforcing the forward line, Gimenez’s commitment gives Milan flexibility as they assess striker targets, as they have been recently in touch with Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic and Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface.

'It inspires another generation' – Jonathan Trott believes his team is inspiring Afghanistan's youth

Afghanistan’s victory over Pakistan in the World Cup game in Chennai is so monumental that it could inspire the next generation in the country to take up cricket, their head coach Jonathan Trott says.”I think it just shows the amount of talent in the side for the country again, as when we were fortunate enough to beat England,” Trott said at his post-match press conference. “It inspires another generation of players to pick up a cricket bat and a cricket ball, work on their fielding and their fitness. We see that the guys are very fit today and fielding for 50 overs and then Ibrahim [Zadran] batting for 35, close to 40 overs is a great, great credit to him.”Seamer Naveen-ul-Haq also toasted Afghanistan’s win – their first over Pakistan in eight attempts in ODI cricket – and hoped that it would bring joy and solace to their fans back home.Related

“It does mean a lot to the people of our country back home,” Naveen said at the mixed-zone media interaction. “As you know, the situation back home…The earthquake also hit [in Herat] a few days ago. So, there’s not a lot of happiness in the country without cricket. So, at least we’ve given them some moments of happiness tonight.”Naveen also insisted that Afghanistan’s recent wins will not impact his decision to retire from ODI cricket after the ongoing World Cup. He continues to be a key player for Afghanistan – and various franchise teams – in T20 cricket.”No, no, no. Not at all. That’s my final decision I’ve made,” Naveen said. “Luckily, I will remember this World Cup for the rest of my life – beating Pakistan and beating England. I’m hoping for the best in the upcoming games.”Afghanistan registered their first ODI win against Pakistan in Chennai•ICC/Getty Images

Afghanistan had also taken down defending champions England earlier in the tournament, but Trott urged his team to be more consistent in all disciplines if they’re to chalk up more such wins in the future.”I think it’s just a message of consistency and not being scared to say, listen, we need to improve in these areas, let’s make sure we do this,” Trott said. “And I’m under no illusion that there are areas that need improving, like any side though. So, if we improve at those slowly, I think our all-round package improves and you’ll be able to handle the pressure like we’ve done tonight.”I’m looking forward. I’m already sort of thinking about plans for Sri Lanka.”But for me as a coach, it’s fantastic to be able to sit here. The players deserve a lot of the credit. It’s not what I’m feeding them. It’s what they’re feeding themselves in practice and the way that they think about the game and the professionalism that’s building. The one thing I would say … they’re very fit. They’re working incredibly hard at their fitness and then in the gym, they’re not doing beach weights, they’re doing proper fitness work and we saw that today with Rahmat [Shah] being able to field for 50 overs and then bat for the amount of time that he did in that heat, so it’s a real credit to the players.”

Coutinho's nightmare Aston Villa spell has finally ended as he secured a permanent move to Vasco da Gama, after spending the 2024-25 campaign on loan at the Brazilian club. The midfielder tried to push for a permanent transfer last summer by mutually terminating his contract and joining Vasco on a free transfer but the Villans at that time only sanctioned a loan move.

AdvertisementWHAT ASTON VILLA SAID

The official statement from the Premier League club read: "Aston Villa can confirm that Philippe Coutinho has completed a permanent move to Vasco da Gama. The midfielder was on loan with the Brazilian side last term and returned to the club following the end of his temporary stint, but both clubs have now agreed a deal for the playmaker to go back to his hometown club on a permanent basis. After signing for Villa initially on loan in January 2022, he went on to pen a permanent deal at Villa Park and made 43 appearances in claret and blue, scoring six goals. Everyone at Aston Villa would like to thank Philippe for his service to the club and wish him all the best in his future career."

Coutinho joined Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona in January 2022 before making his transfer permanent six months later. However, he failed to make an impact under Unai Emery and was sent out on loan to Qatari side Al-Duhail ahead of the 2023-24 season.
