Fakhar Zaman, freshly recalled to the side, then turned in his best showing in months, a vintage 74-ball 81 that set Pakistan up for a win that gave both their confidence and net run-rate a shot in the arm.Click here to read the full reportMatch analysis: It’s been hard work, but Afridi has found a wayShaheen Shah Afridi – in his 51st ODI – became the third-fastest to reach 100 wickets in the format•Getty ImagesShaheen Shah Afridi has probably not been among the best bowlers at the World Cup. Yet, he is the joint-highest wicket-taker, going at an acceptable 5.22 an over and taking a wicket every 23 balls. It is an achievement more remarkable than it looks. Firstly, because it is easier to isolate a bowler in a one-man show than a batter. A batter can still bat through an innings even if the others have not turned up; a bowler gets to bowl only ten overs and the batters can sit on them if they know others are not in form. Rashid Khan, for example, knows that feeling, and has to consistently fight for success.Read the full analysis from Sidharth Monga in KolkataMust Watch: Wasim an effective back-end bowler1:22

Manjrekar: South Africa still don’t look convincing

It started with a World Cup quarter-final that turned into a proper scrap in Mirpur in 2011. It marked the arrival of a cricket rivalry that isn’t talked about a lot, but often gives us games that ain’t good for the heart – just like the rugby World Cup final from a few nights ago.Auckland 2015 and Birmingham 2019, the two most recent men’s ODI World Cup fixtures since the rivalry sprung to life, were both thrillers of different kinds. One a semi-final with everything on the line, and the other a league fixture, like Wednesday’s will be. This one will dictate how the top half of the points table shapes up heading into the last bit of the league stage.Full previewTeam newsSouth Africa (probable): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Gerald Coetzee/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi NgidiNew Zealand (probable): 1 Will Young, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Tom Latham (capt, wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Jimmy Neesham, 9 Matt Henry, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Tim Southee/Lockie FergusonFeature: South Africa’s cricketers are stronger together as they look to emulate Springboks2:16

No, nothing about this part of the story is about cricket. In rugby’s fiercest rivalry, the Springboks and All Blacks met at the World Cup final in Paris during the weekend in a match that has been lauded as one of the greatest games the sport has ever seen. It was a nerve-shredder, as you can probably tell from the score-line, and ended with both teams down to 14 players and plenty of tears.Read the full feature from Firdose Moonda

Karvelas cleared by ECB after investigation into Leicestershire incident

Seamer had been made unavailable for selection after fractious encounter at Hove

Ari Karvelas, the Sussex seamer, has been cleared of breaching ECB regulations on player behaviour following an investigation into an incident during the LV= Insurance County Championship game against Leicestershire at Hove last season.Karvelas was made unavailable by his club for the final two matches of the season, reportedly over a comment made to Leicestershire’s Pakistan international batter Umar Amin during a fractious encounter, which also resulted in an ECB ban for Cheteshwar Pujara, Sussex’s captain, and Tom Haines and Jack Carson being stood down for a game apiece.Sussex won the game but were subsequently docked 12 points by the ECB, effectively ruling them out of the running for promotion from Division Two.More than a month after the conclusion of the season, Sussex released a statement declaring the matter closed: “Sussex Cricket can confirm that the ECB Integrity Team has concluded its investigation into Ari Karvelas following the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Leicestershire on September 13.”The ECB Integrity Team has confirmed that there has not been a breach of the ECB regulations and therefore, no further action will be taken. The club now considers this matter closed and will not comment further.”Without the services of Karvelas, their leading wicket-taker in the Championship, Sussex collected a draw and a win from their final two games, which lifted them to a third-placed finish behind Durham and Worcestershire.

Warner dead-bats Johnson's views: 'Everyone's entitled to their own opinions'

Captain Pat Cummins said they would get behind Warner as much as they needed to

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2023David Warner has opened up on Mitchell Johnson’s criticism of his retirement plans, saying his former team-mate is entitled to his opinions, however scathing.Warner refusing to add fuel to the fire comes as Australian captain Pat Cummins said the Test team would be “fiercely protective” of the veteran opener in the face of external attacks.Warner is hoping to call time on an illustrious Test career after Australia faces Pakistan on his home deck at the SCG in the third and final match of the series that begins in Perth next week.Related

Johnson received 'pretty bad' text from Warner that sparked his column

But in a newspaper column at the weekend, Johnson questioned whether Warner had been in strong enough form to set his own retirement date and opened up old wounds by referencing his role in the “Sandpapergate” ball-tampering saga. The extent of Johnson’s critique, which included suggesting that “Bunnings would sell out of sandpaper”, has brought criticism but Warner himself laughed the comments off as he addressed them for the first time.”It wouldn’t be a summer without a headline, would it?” he said at the launch of Fox Cricket’s summer coverage in Parramatta on Friday. “It is what it is. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions. Moving forward, we’re looking forward to a nice Test over in the west.”Since the summer of 2020-21, Warner has managed only one Test century from 25 matches – a memorable double-hundred against South Africa in his 100th Test at the MCG in late 2022.Australian selectors have stuck by Warner amid the lean stretch, which has admittedly featured two dismissals in the 90s, and are in the midst of determining his replacement beyond Sydney. The playing group has been just as supportive in recent days.”I think we protect each other a lot,” Cummins said. “We’ve been through a lot over the years, our boys. Someone like Davey or Steve [Smith], I’ve played with them for a dozen years now so we’re fiercely protective of each other.”Sometimes you’ve got to remind yourself of the amount of positive support that is out there.”Warner, focused on ending his career on a high, said he learned long ago to knuckle down in the face of criticism like Johnson’s.”My parents ingrained that into me,” he said. “They taught me every day to fight and work hard. When you go onto the world stage and you don’t realise what comes with that, it’s a lot of media, a lot of criticism but a lot of positive.”I think what’s more important is what you see here today, the people coming out to support cricket.”Cummins was hopeful Australia can move past the saga ahead of their first home match since a successful winter that yielded wins in the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship finals as well as a drawn Ashes series in England. The Perth Test is also set to mark Nathan Lyon’s return from the calf injury he suffered early in the Ashes.”We’ve had arguably our most successful year ever. We’re going into a really exciting summer,” Cummins said. “There’s so many positive things around Australian cricket I think we should be talking about and we’re focusing on that [Johnson’s column].”

Barcelona goalkeeper Szczesny waxed lyrical about his fellow club team-mate Pedri, naming the midfielder as the most impressive player he has ever played with. Despite playing with stalwarts such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, and Mohamed Salah, Szczesny picking Pedri as the one who impressed him the most speaks volumes about the 22-year-old's talent.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pedri had a phenomenal 2024-25 season, and it was no surprise that Barca's domination on all fronts coincided with the midfield technician playing the best football of his career hitherto. Not only did he prove himself to be among the best midfielders in Europe, but also earned "best player in the world" and Ballon d'Or shouts from fans on social media. Indeed, Pedri's contributions from midfield played a huge role in helping the Catalans lift the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana trophies.

  • WHAT WOJCIECH SZCZESNY SAID

Speaking on the podcast, Szczesny said: "What Pedri has done this season… I've never seen a season like this from any player. Watching him live, watching him control the game both defensively and offensively… It's incredible. He's the player who has impressed me most in my entire life. I don't know what his genius is, but he doesn't lose possession."

Warner picks Warner's replacement: 'Harris has always been next in line'

David Warner has given a strong endorsement for Marcus Harris to replace him as Australia’s next Test opener after a day where he and Usman Khawaja showed the value of having specialists do the job, sharing a 90-run opening stand in difficult conditions against Pakistan to help Australia weather the storm.Warner and Khawaja batted almost through the opening session after they were sent in by Pakistan captain Shan Masood on an MCG pitch that had plenty of live green grass. The partnership ensured Australia did not find themselves in a vulnerable position as they reached stumps at 187 for 3 after 24 overs were lost to rain. The debate on who should replace Warner after he retires from the format – at the end of the series – has bubbled away as a talking point, with Michael Hussey adding to the debate by stating he would prefer to see a specialist do the job.Related

Warner had been asked back in July about who should replace him. He spoke glowingly about Matt Renshaw’s credentials before mentioning that Harris had the “front-row seat” as the touring reserve in the Ashes. But after grinding out an 83-ball 38 in a vital 90-run opening stand, that included being dropped on 2 by Abdullah Shafique off Shaheen Shah Afridi, Warner endorsed Harris as the man to take his place after he retires in Sydney.”It’s a tough one,” Warner said. “It’s obviously up to the selectors. But from my position, I feel like the person who’s worked their backside off and has been there for a while in the background, I think Harry’s been that person. He’s toured, he’s going to have that chance. He scored a hundred the other day [for a Victoria XI vs the Pakistanis].”He missed out in a couple other games but he’s always been that person who was next in line. If the selectors show faith in him, then I’m sure he’ll come out and play the way he does. It’s not too dissimilar to me. If he sees it in his areas, he goes for it, plays his shots, and I think he would fit well.”Warner, 37, does not think Australia will need a second opener any time soon despite his current partner Khawaja being the same age as him. He was full of praise for Khawaja’s performance on the opening day. Khawaja made just 42 but looked the more comfortable of the pair and hardly put a foot wrong in the tricky morning conditions until he tried to late cut a ball from Hasan Ali that was a fraction too close and slightly too full and ended up edging it to second slip.Warner believes Khawaja could continue for as long as he wants to, given the form he is in and his importance to the team.”I think because Uzzy’s spoken about the fact that he was resigned to the fact that he was done a few years back and now he’s just playing like every game is his last,” Warner said. “He’s going to keep playing as long as he can and it’s a true testament to the way his mindset has been. His last 12 months have been absolutely phenomenal and he can play as long as he wants to and feels comfortable.”

Warner: ‘Khawaja’s got a lot of respect from a lot of people’

Khawaja wore the names of his two daughters on his shoes, having taped over the words that he had on them at training in Perth. Warner, who has also had the names of his wife and daughters written on his shoes throughout the latter half of his career, believes Khawaja has not been distracted at all by the off-field drama in the lead-up to the Boxing Day Test surrounding the ICC’s rejection of his application to display a dove and olive branch on his shoes and bat to raise awareness around the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.Usman Khawaja and David Warner put together 90 for the first wicket•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

“Writing your kids’ names, for me it’s sentimental, they’re always with me and that’s something that he decided to do,” Warner said. “But he’s been fine. He’s put his statement out there that he believes in, that all lives are equal.”He wouldn’t have made that statement if he didn’t feel like he could take the criticism. He knew that he would get criticism. And, at the end of the day, he’s a big boy and I just said to him, ‘you just got to keep believing what you believe in and move on and get on with cricket’. And he’s done that pretty well.”Warner was full of praise for the stance his long-time friend had taken and the example that he sets in the community.”He’s always been a leader around the group,” Warner said. “Even at New South Wales, when we were young, he’s always been that guy that’s always put his hand up to help. Especially with his community stuff. The work that goes on behind the scenes that he does for his community and his foundation is outstanding, and I think that’s the person that he is. He’s got a lot of respect from a lot of people.”

After another full 90-minute performance from Lionel Messi, who scored twice in Inter Miami’s win over New England, manager Javier Mascherano addressed growing concerns about the Argentine star’s minutes piling up in recent weeks.

"Our initial plan was to give him some rest tonight," Mascherano admitted during the post-match press conference. "But once New England scored, we felt the pressure and decided to keep him on. In the next few matches, we need to find the right moment to let him rest."

Mascherano emphasized that Messi was always going to feature, but hoped the match scenario would allow for rotation.
"We were clear that Leo would play, but we were hoping the game would give us a window to rest him. Once New England scored, we felt it was better to keep him on the pitch. Still, at some point, we need to give him a break," he said.

In the 15 MLS matches Messi has played this season, the only one he didn’t complete was on March 29 against the Philadelphia Union. He was not included in the squad for the April 27 match against FC Dallas, which was the last time he was given a rest.

He’s now played the full 90 minutes in nine consecutive MLS games for , along with four matches in the Club World Cup and the final four games of Inter Miami’s Champions Cup run.

Mascherano also addressed concerns around goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, who had a strong performance but appeared to be in discomfort late in the match.
"It was just a knock, not a serious injury. We’ll monitor him over the next few days," he confirmed.
