Per Foot Mercato, Arsenal launched a bid to sign Jacquet from Stade Rennais this summer but were met with disappointment. The 20-year-old centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Clermont Foot in Ligue 2, and enjoyed a strong campaign to boot, and he has rejected the opportunity to move to England.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Instead, Jacquet is set to continue his development, with Rennes offering him a long-term contract in reaction to the Gunners' bid. A France U21 international, he has made 12 first-team appearances for the club, and will now aim to make a significant impact in Ligue 1. Arsenal, for their part, have signed Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia to bolster their defence.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Jacquet would maybe have been seen as a depth option, a prospect for the Gunners to develop. He is capable of playing at both right-back and centre-back, and has even played in defensive midfield.

Brad Wheal, Michael Jones return to Scotland T20 World Cup squad but Josh Davey misses out

Michael Jones and Brad Wheal have returned to Scotland’s 15-man provisional squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA next month, but the experienced Somerset seamer Josh Davey is a notable absentee.Jones and Wheal, who play for Durham and Hampshire respectively, were not included in Scotland’s squad for this month’s T20 Tri-Series against Netherlands and Ireland, but have been cleared by their counties for involvement in the World Cup campaign, along with the Sussex 2nd XI wicketkeeper Charlie Tear, and at the expense of seam bowler Gavin Main, who is the only change from the Tri-Series squad.Davey, however, misses out, having been integral to Somerset’s strong start to the season, including with key wickets in their two-day victory over Essex at Taunton in this week’s round of County Championship fixtures, a result that has left the club just two points off the top of the Division One table.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands that neither Davey nor his Somerset team-mate Andrew Umeed, who is uncapped at T20I level, were made available for World Cup selection. Davey’s absence is a particular setback given his wealth of experience. He has played in each of Scotland’s last three T20 World Cup campaigns in 2016, 2021 and 2022, including a haul of nine wickets at 13.66 in the 2021 tournament.”It was a really difficult selection meeting and it’s never easy getting it down to a squad of 15,” Doug Watson, Scotland’s head coach, said. “It was ultimately about getting the balance of the squad just right and we feel we’ve done that here.”It’s good that we’ve got some of our county players available, and we are really excited with the 15 we’ve chosen, so now we can look forward to what lies ahead.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Scotland are due to play England (June 4), Namibia (June 6), Oman (June 9) and Australian (June 15) in Group B of the tournament, with the top two sides from each group then progressing to the Super Eight phase of the tournament ahead of the knockout semi-finals and final.”To have Michael Jones and Brad Wheal available, their experience from previous T20 World Cups is crucial for the group,” Watson said.”The bulk of the squad have been together for a while now and did a fantastic job last summer at both the 50-over [World Cup] Qualifier and the T20 Qualifier. It’s nice to have a bit of continuity along the way, although they haven’t played a lot of cricket since.”Hopefully, we can see the same level from these players, if not higher, when we get to the Caribbean.”I’m very excited about what lies ahead and I think the players are too, the closer we get to it. For us as a nation, it’s a real opportunity to shine on the global stage. That first game against England, it’ll be quite a day – but we won’t look too far ahead.”Scotland squad: Richie Berrington (capt), Matthew Cross, Brad Currie, Chris Greaves, Ollie Hairs, Jack Jarvis, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Chris Sole, Charlie Tear, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal

Man Utd fan sets up GoFundMe as they aim to help club launch huge summer bid

A Manchester United fan has set up a GoFundMe page in an audacious bid to help the club sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton.

Per the Daily Mail, a United fan has cheekily launched a GoFundMe page, asking for donations to help fund the club's reported move for Baleba at Brighton. The club are currently exploring the conditions of a deal to sign the midfielder, but the reporting states that any deal is unlikely due to the club's unwillingness to sell and his high asking price.

The fan who has launched the page, Ian M, is attempting to raise £120 million ($161m), which is quite the stretch. The most successful charity appeal on the website raised almost £34m ($45m), and was titled 'America's food fund'. United have already signed Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha this summer, along with Diego Leon.

WHAT THE APPEAL SAYS

The appeal reads: "We need this to happen we need this to happen we need this to happen we need this to happen."

So far, at the time of writing, Ian has raised £5.

Mustafizur's six-wicket haul scripts big win for Bangladesh

Despite the ten-wicket loss, USA took home the series by a 2-1 margin

Mustafizur Rahman’s career-best 6 for 10 stunned USA•USA Cricket

Mustafizur Rahman’s career-best 6 for 10 backed up by an unbeaten century-stand between Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar helped Bangladesh claim a resounding ten-wicket win over USA in the third and final T20I in Dallas. It brought down the series margin to 2-1 for USA, who would nonetheless celebrate a milestone performance.Mustafizur’s six-for – the first time a Bangladesh bowler claimed a six-wicket haul in T20Is – restricted USA to 104 for 9. In reply, Tanzid and Sarkar added 108 runs in just 11.5 overs to take Bangladesh home. This was Mustafizur’s second six-for in white-ball cricket after his 6 for 43 against India in an ODI in 2015.Apart from Mustafizur, wristspinner Rishad Hossain also bowled brilliantly conceding just seven runs in his four overs and picking a wicket. This was Bangladesh’s most economical T20I spell (minimum four overs). Before both of these milestones though, Shakib Al Hasan reached a unique feat, too.Shakib takes his 700th wicketHaving secured the series, USA rested four first-choice players in Monank Patel, Steven Taylor, Harmeet Singh and Ali Khan. They got off to a blazing start after being sent in, with Shayan Jahangir creaming Hasan Mahmud for two fours in the second over before Andries Gous launched Shakib for a huge six over midwicket. Gous then took a liking to Tanzim Hasan Sakib, hitting him twice through point and cover, in between a beautiful flick shot.Gous finished the fourth over with another four through fine leg. After Jahangir lofted Shakib for his first six next over, Najmul Hossain Shanto dropped Gous on 23. He smacked the next ball for four, but Shakib finally removed Gous in the same over. He made 27 off 15 balls, becoming Shakib’s 700th international wicket. Shakib became the 17th cricketer to reach the milestone but the first to get to the mark with 14000-plus runs under his belt. The USA team poses with the trophy after the historic series win•USA Cricket

Rishad sparks USA slowdownJahangir was dismissed in the last over of the powerplay caught at deep square leg off Mustafizur. Nitish Kumar and Milind Kumar could only add ten runs in 3.5 overs before Mustafizur broke this stand in the 10th over when Nitish was caught behind for 3.Rishad meanwhile kept things tight at the other end. Milind was his only wicket, getting caught in the deep leg-side boundary after a painstaking 7 off 20 balls. Before Milind’s wicket, Tanzim had removed stand-in USA captain Aaron Jones in the 12th over, when he half-heartedly struck a pull shot down Rishad’s throat at the deep square-leg boundary.USA fizzle to FizzWhen Shadley van Schalkwyk struck Mahmudullah for a four through long-on, it was USA’s first boundary in 10.5 overs. Corey Anderson then hit Tanzim for a four and six in the next over and it looked like the home side were warming up for a fast finish.Mustafizur put paid to those thoughts removing both van Schalkwyk and Anderson in the 18th over. Bowling from the around-the-wicket angle to both left-handers, he first got one to slide away from van Schalkwyk to hit the top of his off stump while Anderson chopped one onto his stumps for 18. Mustafizur then delivered a yorker through Jasdeep Singh’s legs in the last over, before getting Nisarg Patel to slice one at point for his sixth wicket.Tanzid, Soumya ease the nervesBangladesh motored along through the powerplay as USA struggled without their three first-choice bowlers. Tanzid slapped two Saurabh Netravalkar half-volleys for fours through the covers. Soumya survived two mistimed shots in between a four and a six in van Schalkwyk’s first over before Tanzid went after Jasdeep and Milind in the next two overs. The pair struck one four each in Nitish’s over, and then one six each off NetravalkarTanzid reached his third T20I fifty in the 11th over before his second six got the partnership to three figures. Soumya played the perfect foil with his unbeaten 43 off 28 balls with two sixes. The pair put on their second century stand in 15 days.

Chris Jordan set for T20 World Cup recall as Chris Woakes misses out

Jamie Overton injury offers route to recall for 35-year-old allrounder, with Hartley also set for inclusion

Vithushan Ehantharajah and Matt Roller29-Apr-2024Chris Jordan is set for an England recall as part of their provisional T20 World Cup squad, which will be announced on Tuesday.Jordan earned the last of 88 T20I caps at the end of the 2023 summer against New Zealand, and missed the white-ball tour of the Caribbean in December. However, with Jamie Overton ruled out through injury, Jordan is the beneficiary as a bowler capable of valuable cameos with the bat lower down the order.ESPNcricinfo understands that Jordan’s recall is expected to spell bad news for Chris Woakes, who is yet to feature for Punjab Kings at the IPL this season. Ben Duckett has also made the cut as England’s spare batter – and a rare left-hander – while the uncapped Tom Hartley is expected to edge Rehan Ahmed out as the second frontline spinner, behind Adil Rashid.Jordan brings a wealth of experience, with five previous World Cups under his belt and two seasons as Surrey’s T20 captain. The 35-year-old played two matches in England’s successful 2022 campaign, which was his fourth global T20 tournament. Though he is likely to feature sparingly in the Caribbean, he remains an exceptional fielder – often used as a sub – and a willing death bowler.Possible England World T20 squad•ESPNcricinfo LtdEngland tracked Overton closely through the winter and were keen on him as a genuine allrounder. But inconclusive scans on a back injury have resulted in his omission from the provisional squad. In his absence, Jordan’s recent improvement with the bat is a relevant factor: since the start of the 2023 Vitality Blast, he has averaged 30.05 and struck at 160.53 in all T20 cricket.Despite his omission from England’s squad that lost 3-2 in the T20I series against West Indies, Jordan had a busy winter, representing Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL, Gulf Giants in the ILT20 and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. He has not played since March, but will tune up for the World Cup with England’s four-match T20I series against Pakistan from May 22.Related

England are expected to pick a top four comprising Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow, all of whom have found form at the IPL. Buttler (twice), Jacks and Bairstow have all hit centuries for their respective franchises, while Salt’s first eight innings brought him three half-centuries and a strike rate of 176.08.Jofra Archer is also expected to feature in the provisional squad, despite a long-standing elbow injury that has prevented him from playing a competitive fixture since May 2023.Though Archer recently admitted that another “stop-start year” could lead him to consider his future at the age of 29, the ECB hope the four-match Pakistan series can offer him a return to international cricket, ahead of a World Cup campaign that could include a maiden England appearance in front of his friends and family in his native Barbados. There is the possibility that he will warm up with some T20 appearances for Sussex’s 2nd XI in the coming weeks.England will also be missing the services of Ben Stokes, their matchwinner in both the 2019 (50-over) and 2022 World Cups, who announced last month that he would not be making himself available as he continues his rehabilitation following recent knee surgery.Possible England T20 World Cup squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali (vice-captain), Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Tom Hartley, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Reece Topley

'Really mad and a little bit numb inside' – Goalkeeper Matt Freese reflects on emotional aftermath of USMNT's Gold Cup final loss to regional rival Mexico

The USMNT goalkeeper opened up about the tense locker room after the loss, but also stressed that the players built a bond

Freese describes "disbelief" among playersReveals emotionally charged atmosphere Highlights positive team chemistry during tournamentGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese detailed the emotional aftermath of the team's 2-1 Gold Cup final loss to regional rival Mexico, describing the immediate reaction as one of disbelief and anger. The New York City FC goalkeeper said that the USMNT entered the match confident after winning five straight to reach the final.

“It was tough,” Freese said on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast. “There's not much to say about it honestly, just because like you're sitting there, you kind of feel numb. It's kind of like a disbelief type of thing. And especially the way the summer was going with the vibes that we had on the team. The camaraderie that we've got on the team, we felt like, it's got to be a win, right? Like, it's got to end positively.

"We fell short, that's on us.  But I mean yeah we're sitting there, we saw them go up on the stage. And I was pissed, man. Like I was really mad and a little bit numb inside. Just didn't really say much, you know,. I was pretty silent and then we get to the locker room. It's also silent in there and a lot of anger, but also a lot of sadness and just disappointment in ourselves."

AdvertisementWHAT FREESE SAID

The goalkeeper highlighted coach coach Mauricio Pochettino's emotional post-match address.

“Mauricio gets in there, honestly, he gave a fantastic speech," Freese said. "It was really emotional, very raw. But It was one of those speeches that, like, you kind of like turn around after and you're like, 'Damn, we did become a team this summer.' Yeah, you know we we're proud of each other – not ultimately proud because we didn't win the final. But you know, proud of what we did kind of off the field."

Freese admits that there were questions about the squad entering the tournament, but says the team bonded over the six games – a stretch in which he started all the matches in goal.

“There were a lot of questions going into the summer. I mean, you know, I was kind of on the outside looking in at the beginning before the summer starts," he said. "Just think about like, you know, 45 days in a hotel straight together? And you know, we weren't sick of each other. And I don't know if that ever happened. We wanted to like keep hanging out after the game.

"And, you know, we were like, 'Damn, like we're gonna miss each other.' It was a really special group that we had in terms of, the chemistry that we built… and it's I think it was a great step. Again you know, it was my first real experience with that type of stuff. So I don't know what it typically is like. But it was a group that really grew together off the field and I think that was a very important part of the summer, as well.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the disappointing final, the goalkeeper emphasized significant progress in team chemistry and cohesion throughout the competition.
