Liverpool prepare mammoth £150m plot to land Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi in final days of transfer window with Reds expecting Newcastle to soften stance on star striker

Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The club's pursuit of Isak has dragged on all summer, with Newcastle repeatedly holding out for more cash (they value the Swede at a whopping £150m). Now, with just days left of the window, Liverpool are ramping up their efforts to get a deal over the line, while also growing increasingly confident that they can snatch Guehi from Palace too, according to the Mirror.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Whether Newcastle let Isak go this summer largely depends on whether they're able to complete the signing of Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, who impressed last season and is proving to be tricky to prise away from the West Midlands club. The Magpies recently had a £55m bid knocked back, but if they can get up their bid and convince Wolves to part with Strand Larsen, it could open up room for Isak to jump ship.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Regardless of whether or not they can get hold of Newcastle's star striker, Liverpool are reportedly growing more confident that they could sign Guehi before the window shuts on Monday. Palace chairman Steve Parish is said to be after £40m, but with the centre-back only having a year left on his contract, it's possible that the club would accept a bid slightly below that asking price.

O São Paulo enfrentará o Água Santa e mandará o jogo no Allianz Parque – estádio do rival Palmeiras.

Man Utd's worst defeats of the 21st century: Where does Grimsby nightmare rank among 'Why Always Me?', Liverpool thrashings and MK Dons embarrassment?

The shock Carabao Cup elimination at Blundell Park was the latest of many painful defeats the Red Devils have had to endure in the last 25 years

They say that when you hit rock bottom, the only way is up. But Manchester United fans have learned that that is simply not true; even when you think that things couldn't possibly get any worse, they can and often do.

Ruben Amorim had promised Red Devils' fans after their worst season in 52 years that the good time were coming, but three matches into the new campaign and the club appear to be sinking even further into the abyss, especially after Wednesday's shock elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town of League Two.

It marked only the second time that United had been knocked out of the League Cup in the second round in 30 years, and it was arguably the worst defeat of Amorim's dismal nine-month spell in charge. And yet it was just one of many abysmal results inflicted on the club in the last 25 years.

GOAL ranks the worst defeats United have endured in all competitions in the 21st century…

Despite the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Nani and Ryan Giggs, Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils were unable to overpower Manchester City. Sven-Goran Eriksson's team beat United on home soil in the second week of the campaign, but the defeat at Old Trafford the following February was particularly painful.

The match came just days after the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, but Ferguson's team fell behind through goals from Darius Vassell and Benjani. Michael Carrick scored late on for United, but they were unable to rescue a point.

The wheels had well and truly fallen off under Ralf Rangnick by the time United made the trip to Brighton near the end of the 2021-22 season. Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard all scored in the first hour at the Amex Stadium as the Red Devils were crushed by Graham Potter's team.

They went on to draw with Chelsea and lose to Crystal Palace in the final two games of the season as they scraped to a sixth-placed finish in the top-flight.

Getty Images13Manchester United 0-3 Manchester City | March 25, 2014

If losing 4-1 away to City in the third week of the Premier League season wasn't bad enough, David Moyes' spell in charge got even worse when the Red Devils were hammered by their noisy neighbours on home soil. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring in the first minute before adding a second just before the hour mark while Yaya Toure then completed the destruction towards the end.

City went on to win the title while United finished in seventh place, and Moyes went on to say that his team must aspire to be at their cross-city rivals' level, an assertion that did not go down well with United's fans.

Getty Images12Manchester United 1-4 Liverpool | March 14, 2009

It was all going so well when Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead after 22 minutes at Old Trafford. The fun did not last long, though, as Fernando Torres equalised before the half-hour mark. Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena then completed the turnaround and the humiliation, as Liverpool claimed a 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

The Reds beat United twice in the league that season as they kept them under pressure in the title race, but in the end the Red Devils finished four points clear and lifted the Premier League trophy yet again.

Wrexham confirm signing of Man City starlet Issa Kabore as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney also strike deal for Blackburn Rovers defender Dominic Hyam

Wrexham completed the double signing of Manchester City starlet Issa Kabore and Blackburn Rovers defender Dominic Hyam on deadline day. Kabore, who joined the Cityzens in 2020, has had six different loan spells across Europe in the last five years and will now be taking in a seventh with the Red Dragons. Hyam, a former Reading youth player, joins the Welsh side permanently after spending three seasons at Blackburn.

Wrexham ended the summer transfer window with two more additions to their squad, as they signed Kabor from Manchester City on loan and Hyam from Blackburn for an undisclosed fee. The deadline day signings took their total tally of new arrivals to 13 as the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned side enjoyed a busy window following their promotion to the Championship.

The Red Dragons have not had the ideal start to their journey in the English second-tier, registering just one win out of their first four Championship matches, which leaves them down in 15th. They have already conceded seven goals, which prompted manager Phil Parkinson to sign defensive reinforcements on the final day of the window.

WHAT KABORE & HYAM SAID

After signing for Wrexham, Kabore told the club's website: "I’m feeling good, I’m very happy to be a Wrexham player. The project here is so amazing. Wrexham is a family Club, a fantastic Club, and that’s why I’m here. I will give everything for this team."

Hyam also expressed his delight: "It’s really exciting for me. I’m looking forward to meeting the players and the fans and getting started. Speaking to people about Wrexham and seeing how quickly it has gone from strength to strength, it is so attractive as a player to be a part of that. Seeing the success and how well they have done on the pitch and how they have strengthened every season, just really attracted me to it. I thought it was a really exciting opportunity."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

reported earlier this week that the Merseyside club are still ready to splash £150 million ($202m), as they remain in the hunt for Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, along with Guehi. Former Palace defender and Guehi's team-mate Tomkins has now urged the Reds to pursue the transfer as he heaped praise on the England international.

  • WHAT TOMKINS SAID

Speaking to Boyle Sports, who offer the latest Premier League betting odds, the former Palace star said: "Marc Guehi has been absolutely phenomenal for Palace ever since he's been there. He's a great guy as well. So I think it's inevitable that he'll leave eventually, whether it's now, at Christmas, or the end of the season, we don't know, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be one of them.

"I've always thought he'd fit into Liverpool perfectly. Him and Virgil van Dijk at the back would be pretty solid to see. I actually rate him that much that if Liverpool sign him, they will go and win the league, just because that's the only place I see Liverpool a little bit weak at the minute, at the back. Ibrahima Konate is a good player and all that, obviously partnering with Virgil, but I think Marc is in a different league, to be honest, so let's see. I think he could be a massive signing for Liverpool."
