Aston Villa heading for Benteke repeat over "top talent" & it's not Watkins

Few clubs experienced as turbulent a summer as Aston Villa.

After finishing sixth last season and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, expectations were high.

Yet concerns over Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) quickly took over.

Rumours emerged that Villa would have to sell before they could buy, casting doubt over their ability to compete at the top level. The biggest worry was losing key players.

Emiliano Martínez looked destined for Manchester United at one stage, while Ollie Watkins became the subject of interest from both the Red Devils and Newcastle.

Both stayed, but uncertainty persisted until deadline day.

Villa did manage to add fresh faces, bringing in Evan Guessand alongside the high-profile arrivals of Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho, but the feeling lingered that Villa’s business was reactive rather than strategic.

That instability has been reflected on the pitch. The team are still searching for their first league win, finally scoring their opening goal of the season in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

With just three points from their opening fixtures, Villa currently sit in the bottom three.

It is an ominous start for a club balancing the demands of Europe and domestic competition.

Remembering Christian Benteke's Aston Villa stint

For many Villa supporters, the situation evokes memories of Christian Benteke, whose meteoric rise at the club ended with a high-profile departure.

Signed from Genk in 2012 for £7 million, Benteke became an instant success.

His debut season saw him score 19 Premier League goals, effectively saving Villa from relegation and cementing his place as one of the league’s most feared strikers.

Over the next three seasons, Benteke scored 49 goals and added 12 assists in 101 appearances, numbers that underlined both his importance and consistency.

Yet while his goals lit up Villa Park, his ambition proved equally significant.

Just a year into his stay, he handed in a transfer request before signing a new contract that included a £32.5 million release clause.

It was a clear indication that Benteke wanted to keep one eye on the Champions League. That clause was triggered by Liverpool in 2015, shortly after Benteke helped Villa reach the FA Cup final.

His time at Liverpool included flashes of brilliance – none more so than his overhead kick against United – but he struggled in Jürgen Klopp’s pressing system and was eventually sold to Crystal Palace.

The Benteke saga left a lasting impression. It showed Villa’s capacity to identify elite talent, but also their vulnerability when those players set their sights elsewhere.

That lesson still resonates a decade later, particularly with how this current squad is shaping up.

Why Morgan Rogers could be the modern echo of Benteke

Fast-forward to the present, and another star may be heading down a similar path: Morgan Rogers.

At just 23 years old, Rogers has already become indispensable for Aston Villa, operating as an attacking midfielder.

Leaving Manchester City in 2023 in search of regular football, he joined Middlesbrough before Villa swooped just six months later for £8 million.

Since then, this “magician” – as described by pundit Micah Richards – has been on the rise.

Last season, he played 54 matches in all competitions, including 37 in the Premier League, where he scored eight goals and registered 11 assists.

His contributions extended to Europe too, as he played 12 times in Villa’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals, adding four goals and three assists.

The data highlights just how central Rogers has become.

Last season, he was involved in 18 goals, and his creativity was backed up by an average of 3.55 progressive passes per 90 minutes.

He also drove Villa forward with the ball at his feet, averaging 3.29 progressive carries per 90.

In the final third, his impact was telling: he attempted 1.59 shots per 90, with 0.58 hitting the target, producing a shot accuracy of 36.4%.

Rogers is not only a volume player but also efficient.

His 73.2% pass completion may not sound high at first glance, but when paired with a progressive passing distance of 96.2 metres per game, it reflects a player constantly looking to take risks and break lines.

He is also a reliable creator, averaging 3.04 shot-creating actions per 90, a number that places him among the most effective attacking midfielders in the league.

However, in a recent interview, he appeared to hint that his ambitions may lie beyond the Midlands, discussing the shirt number he could take at a new club:

Indelicate phrasing has sparked inevitable comparisons with Benteke’s path.

For Villa, the concern is obvious.

Rogers may not be actively seeking a move now, but his words were enough to stir unease among supporters who still remember the pain of Benteke’s exit.

Whether history repeats itself will depend largely on Villa’s ability to match the ambitions of their brightest star.

For now, the echoes of the past feel uncomfortably loud.

Leeds told Farke could sign and "get the best" from Man Utd star if he "loves" him

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has just told rivals Leeds United to go and sign one particular Old Trafford ace when the transfer window opens in January.

Leeds' January transfer plans

Credit where it’s due, Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland have all got off to better starts than anyone could have imagined. All three promoted sides are vying to end the trend of sides crashing straight back down to the Championship and the pressure was on after the last six teams did exactly that. But the record books will show that their respective attempts have so far been more positive than those previous clubs.

All three clubs aren’t resting on their laurels, however, and Leeds have already set their sights on the January transfer window. Daniel Farke has reiterated several times that his side were left short in attack during the summer and solving that problem should be the 49ers’ top priority this winter.

On that front, a number of names have already been mentioned. Recent reports have name-dropped the likes of Josh Sargent when it comes to potential targets and there’s no doubt that the American is ready to take the Premier League step.

Whilst Norwich City have struggled to get going under Liam Manning, Sargent has scored six goals in seven Championship games to get himself on the radar of Premier League clubs.

Alas, it’s not just Farke’s frontline that the 49ers could focus on in the winter window. They’ll be well aware of just how important it is to build on a strong start and secure survival at the first time of asking in the Premier League. As a result, midfield foundations and potentially the addition of a rival star could prove all important.

Sherringham tells Leeds to come and get Mainoo

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, former Premier League striker and Man United legend Sheringham has told Leeds to go and get Kobbie Mainoo in 2026.

The Old Trafford midfielder wanted to leave the club on loan in the summer and the Whites were reportedly among the interested parties before United shut down any potential exit for their academy graduate. Now, after failing to see his game time increase, Sheringham has told Leeds that they should push to sign Mainoo when they get the chance.

Whether those at Elland Road take Sheringham’s advice is the question. In a World Cup year, welcoming a player of Mainoo’s calibre who is fighting for his England place certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Jofra Archer in frame for Test comeback in second game of India series

Jofra Archer is in the frame to play in the second Test against India at Edgbaston next month, according to England’s national selector, Luke Wright, assuming he is able to prove his fitness when Sussex play Durham at Chester-le-Street in a fortnight’s time.Archer, 30, has not played first-class cricket for more than four years due to a succession of injury issues, including multiple surgeries on his troublesome right elbow and a stress fracture of his back.He had been earmarked for a red-ball comeback for England Lions, against India A in this week’s second unofficial Test, but was sidelined due to ligament damage in his thumb, sustained while fielding in the IPL last month.Related

Jamie Overton recalled to England Test squad for India series

Now, however, he is approaching a return to action, and with England facing a defining eight months of Test cricket – encompassing five home Tests against India and an away Ashes tour – the selectors are eager to reinsert him to the mix.”Jof’s also trucking along really well actually,” Wright said. “The plan is for him to play a few second-team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test [June 22-25]. Then if all things go well, fingers crossed, he should be available for the second Test.”Archer’s most recent first-class fixture came for Sussex against Kent in May 2021, prior to the recurrence of his elbow fracture. Before that, the last of his 13 Tests came against India in Ahmedabad in February that year. To date, he has claimed 42 wickets at 31.04, with two six-wicket hauls in the 2019 Ashes.”Like anything with all these bowlers, he’s got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks,” Wright added. “But, if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game, then he’s available potentially for selection for that second Test.”Archer is one of a number of England fast bowlers who are currently on the comeback trail. Mark Wood and Olly Stone both underwent knee operations, in March and April respectively but, according to Wright, are now back to bowling off a few paces, and could come into consideration for the latter half of the India series.Gus Atkinson – England’s player of the summer in 2024 – is also missing from the first Test squad after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Zimbabwe Test.England’s five-match series against India begins on June 20 at Headingley, before back-to-back Tests at Edgbaston (July 2-6) and Lord’s (July 10-14).

Real Madrid player ratings vs Juventus: Are you watching, Thomas Tuchel? Jude Bellingham gets match-winner while Vinicius Jr puts on a Champions League show

Jude Bellingham scored the only goal and Vinicius Jr was a menace all night long as Real Madrid saw off Juventus, 1-0, in a dramatic Champions League contest. Los Blancos really should have scored two or three, but did enough on the night to seal a comfortable win.

Madrid spent the majority of the first half peppering the Juventus goal. Twice Kylian Mbappe came close, and twice he was denied. Aurelien Tchouameni fired narrowly wide. Arda Guler, too, had a good chance. Juve had their moments, and forced Thibaut Courtois into a duo of tidy saves.

Courtois had to be called upon again early in the second half when Dusan Vlahovic ran through on goal, as the big Belgian reached low to deny the striker in a one-on-one. And Madrid took advantage. Bellingham grabbed the goal, but Vinicius made it. The Brazilian beat his man, and smashed a shot off the post. Bellingham ghosted in to turn home the rebound for his first goal of the season.

Los Blancos had further chances. Mbappe stung the keeper's palms. Bellingham threatened. Vinicius continued to create. But a second never quite came off. Still, one was enough on the night, Madrid picking up another valuable win ahead of Saturday's Clasico.

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Thibaut Courtois (8/10):

Made a couple of immense saves to keep Madrid ahead early. Added to it with some impressive stops in the second half.

Federico Valverde (7/10):

Didn't allow anything down his side, and moved the ball well. Unlucky not to score, too. A real return to form.

Raul Asencio (6/10):

Put in a crucial block late on. Otherwise, a bit of a frantic evening. The space behind him was exploited too easily.

Eder Militao (8/10):

Made a couple of magical recovery runs, won his headers and put in an impressive block.

Alvaro Carreras (7/10):

Shielded effectively to let Vinicius work his magic.

Aurelien Tchouameni (5/10):

A bit all over the place defensively, at times, and found himself overrun in central midfield – although the two in front of him are partially to blame.

Jude Bellingham (7/10):

Judged a rebound to take his goal well. Not quite altogether fluid, but he seems to be finding a rhythm.

Arda Guler (7/10):

Magical when he had the ball, full of clever twists and turns. Created seven chances. His defensive work and pressing still needs time, though.

GettyAttack

Brahim Diaz (6/10):

Tidy when he had it, but not the most involved performance.

Kylian Mbappe (7/10):

Stung the keeper's palms consistently, got into good areas, but it didn't come off for him on the night.

Vinicius Jr (8/10):

A menace from the first minute. Ran at his man relentlessly. Deserves plenty of credit for the goal. Seems to have been shaken off some early season rust.

Gonzalo Garcia (N/A):

Went with arguably his strongest XI ahead of El Clasico. Madrid were good throughout, deserved more than just 1-0, and now have 9 points after three games. An excellent start.

Former Barcelona forward could decide to join West Ham after Nuno's arrival

West Ham United are reportedly making transfer plans for January in an effort to back new manager Nuno Espírito Santo, and a former Barcelona forward is said to be on their radar heading into the winter.

West Ham make transfer plans for January to back Nuno

West Ham remain without their first win under Nuno’s tenure after drawing away to Everton and tasting defeat at the hands of Premier League title-chasers Arsenal, but there have been small signs of improvement.

Arsenal are the division’s in-form team right now and getting a result there was always going to be a tall order for Nuno, despite West Ham winning two of their previous two Premier League games at the Emirates.

There is little to go on so far, but you can make a case that West Ham look slightly less vulnerable than under Graham Potter already.

West Ham’s results in the Premier League so far

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

David Sullivan and the Hammers hierarchy, thanks largely to vice-chairman Karren Brady, who pushed for Nuno (Alex Crook), handed the Portuguese a three-year contract in a public statement of backing for West Ham’s new head coach.

Sullivan was in favour of re-appointing Slaven Bilic on a short-term interim contract, but with Nuno given a long-term show of faith instead, reports suggest that West Ham are prepared to back him with new recruits in January.

The consensus thus far is that the Irons are looking at attacking options, with AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic, Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, Galatasaray’s Baris Yilmaz and Man United’s Joshua Zirkzee all mentioned as potential West Ham transfer targets.

It is crystal clear why they’re considering a new forward too.

Only Nottingham Forest and bottom side Wolves have scored fewer league goals than West Ham so far, and on the basis of overall play, they’re in dire need of creativity.

Adama Traoré could decide to join West Ham after Nuno's arrival

Former Barcelona and Wolves forward Adama Traoré, who worked with Nuno to great effect at Molineux, is now being linked with a move to the London Stadium after his former manager’s move there.

The Spain international, now at Fulham, has played a bit-part role under Marco Silva so far this season and could leave for free at the end of this season when his contract expires.

Despite being a regular last season, racking up nine assists in 41 appearances across all competitions, Fulham may well be open to cashing in on Traore when the winter window opens.

Speaking to Football Insider, former West Ham employee and scout Mick Brown has said that Traore could choose to reunite with Nuno in East London.

The 29-year-old’s flashes of quality were at their most consistent under Nuno, and Premier League managers have often piled praise on Traore as a very difficult player to deal with.

Klopp praised Traore yet again soon after that message, calling the winger’s speed “undefendable” at times.

Agent pushing "composed" star to join Sunderland after £2.6m salary offer

After getting off to a solid start back in the Premier League, Sunderland have already reportedly launched a contract offer to sign a January transfer target.

Le Bris drops Sunderland injury update ahead of Wolves

Hoping to get back to winning ways after suffering defeat against Manchester United before the international break, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has dropped a fresh injury update.

His side will play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a crucial relegation six-pointer and one that could take the Black Cats as high as fourth if results go their way.

Providing updates on the injury front in the build-up to this weekend’s clash, Le Bris revealed “positive” news on both Noah Sadiki and Omar Alderete, telling reporters: “For Noah, we checked him yesterday and he seems okay. We will see after the training sessions today and tomorrow if he is available, but we are positive.

“For Omar, after such a long flight, we will see. We had a quick chat with him yesterday and it was positive, but we will have to wait and see. The others have returned all okay.”

The impressive manager also took the time to praise Wolves, who are after their first league win of the season at their eighth attempt. Defeat at the Stadium of Light could already leave the Midlands club four points adrift of safety.

For the Black Cats, the game represents another opportunity to push on in the Premier League and potentially send a statement to one of their top 2026 transfer targets.

Sunderland offer to Jhon Lucumi on the table

As reported by Corriere di Bologna and relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland have tabled a contract offer to Jhon Lucumi worth around €3m (£2.6m) a season. A bid worth €30m (£26m) to Bologna is still on the table in an attempt to secure their central defender when January arrives.

Lucumi’s agent is reportedly pushing the Bologna star to complete a move to the Premier League and Sunderland, but it remains to be seen whether the Serie A club remain as stubborn as they were in the summer.

Described as “ridiculously impressive” and “composed” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Lucumi could finally be on his way to Wearside when the new year arrives.

Kylian Mbappe still ‘missing something’ in bid for elusive Ballon d’Or as fellow World Cup-winning Frenchman assesses decision to become a ‘Galactico’ at Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe has been told that he is still “missing something” in his bid to land an elusive Ballon d’Or. The France international was expected to dominate Golden Ball discussions as all-time greats Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo step out of that spotlight, but he has been informed by a fellow World Cup winner that being a ‘Galactico’ at Real Madrid may not be enough.

  • Mbappe swapped PSG for Real Madrid as a free agent

Mbappe agreed a move to Santiago Bernabeu in 2024 that had been mooted for some time. He severed ties with Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent after reaching the end of his contract. He left the French capital as PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer and embraced a fresh start in the heart of Spain.

His debut campaign with the Blancos delivered 44 goals, alongside UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup honours, but the biggest of domestic and European prizes eluded him. That led to more frustration being endured in the Ballon d’Or vote, with former PSG team-mate and international colleague Ousmane Dembele going on to be named the best player on the planet in 2025.

What is Mbappe's highest finish in the Ballon d'Or vote?

Mbappe could only muster a seventh-place finish. Claiming third spot behind Messi and Erling Haaland in 2023 – on the back of enduring World Cup final heartache with France at Qatar 2022 – remains his highest ranking to date. Others, such as Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal, are threatening to rise above Mbappe when it comes to future awards.

Marcel Desailly, who helped France to global glory in 1998, admits that Mbappe cannot expect to land the most prestigious of individual accolades until his wait for Champions League glory has come to a close and Real Madrid reassert their dominance in Spain.

  • Can Mbappe win a Golden Ball? Desailly delivers his verdict

Speaking in association with , Desailly told GOAL when asked for his assessment of an iconic countryman: “Mbappe. Wow, he made the move that eventually allowed him to be that Ballon d'Or that he himself is looking for. And he had great years in Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, it was a Paris Saint-Germain with all these stars allying and they've not been able really to score. But Mbappe, when he was 24/25 in Paris, was just amazing.

“I feel that he was, the agility, the speed and all what he was showing back in the days was much more accurate than what he's showing now. Even though this year he has performed, I don't know his statistics, but he has scored more than 40 goals, he left Paris with 40-odd goals and he came back in Madrid and did the same thing, he scored similar stats.

“So it's just unfortunate that Madrid has dropped. The cycle of Madrid has dropped a little bit. It's not the end of a cycle. It's dropped in the cycle with a new coach, a new philosophy now, because [Carlo] Ancelotti, he didn't find a way to make the team to be sparkling again, you know. You could see that tactically something was missing in the squad. They were still winning by luck.

“Because the gods of football love Madrid they've been able to find some good opportunities to win some games, but it's not enough. It's not enough for the Champions League and for their Spanish league. But now they are back into kind of stability, but you are not sure because lots of injured players…

“So I believe that he's that key player. The problem he has is the association. The association with the other players. You see? So the association with Vinicius is not that great. They have these new players in the midfield. Xabi [Alonso] is giving him the opportunity to become that important offensive player. So I don't know, it depends on the others also to have that extra. The statistics are magnificent, but he's missing something that will push him to become a Ballon d'Or.”

Trophy bids: La Liga, Champions League & World Cup targets

Mbappe has registered 15 goals for Real this season through 12 appearances in all competitions. He is also just four efforts away from tying with Olivier Giroud as the greatest marksman that France’s national team has ever seen – while being seven appearances short of a century for Les Bleus.

He is in the midst of another Champions League campaign, with the 2026 World Cup to come next summer, and has helped Madrid make an impressive start to their latest La Liga title bid. A Clasico clash with arch-rivals Barcelona is next on the agenda for Alonso’s side.

In 2021, he gave emotional testimony at the Social Justice and Nation Building (SJN) Hearings about feeling excluded from his own community when he played for a white club in the 1970s, and then again at the 1992 World Cup. His experiences of dealing with racism and speaking out about it have also led to his championing the case for inclusion and his passion for working in development. Henry will spend the next two summers (2025 and 2026) in Scotland and will also occasionally travel with the national teams abroad.
