India coach says ‘my heart goes to the families, the people who’ve lost their loved ones’ in Bengaluru
ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jun-20251:15
Gambhir: We should never have roadshows
India coach Gautam Gambhir has said there is no need to have celebratory roadshows in the future, after a stampede caused the death of 11 fans and injured many more in Bengaluru during the functions held on Wednesday to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning their maiden IPL title.”I was never a believer that we need to have roadshows. When I was playing, I had the same statement to make, even after winning 2007 [T20 World Cup], that we should not have road shows,” Gambhir said in Mumbai ahead of India’s departure for the Test tour of England. “I think lives of the people are far more important. I will continue to say that, even in future, I think we can be a little bit aware of not holding these kind of roadshows, and can probably have it in a closed door, or something like this, in a stadium.Related

“It is very tragic what happened yesterday, and my heart goes to the families, the people who’ve lost their loved ones, and I hope in future, nothing like this can happen, because I think we all are responsible, and we all are responsible citizens, and we should take care of all this.”And if we are not ready to hold a roadshow, we shouldn’t have done that. As simple as it can get. I know fans do get excited, everyone gets excited, the fan bases get excited, but nothing can compare to what has happened yesterday.”Even when I used to play, I didn’t believe in roadshows. I don’t believe in them today and I won’t believe in them in the future as well. Winning is important. Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can’t handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows.”Earlier on Thursday, RCB issued a statement announcing “financial support of INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased” and setting up of an RCB Cares fund in aid of the “fans injured in this tragic incident.” The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) also said it would give INR 5 lakh to each of the families of the people who died in the stampede around the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
BCB president Aminul Islam has said the BCCI is yet to confirm India’s tour of Bangladesh in August. The BCCI, according to him, was going to take a decision on the tour after discussions with the Indian government.”I have already spoken to the BCCI. Discussions have been positive,” Aminul said at a press conference in Dhaka following a six-hour meeting of the BCB’s board of directors. “We remain hopeful. It is scheduled [next month] but they are waiting for some decisions from the government.”Related
India to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and three T20Is in August
He said the BCCI had told the BCB that India would tour Bangladesh during the next available window if they don’t come in August. There was no reason given as to why the uncertainty has arisen around the tour.”The discussions are ongoing. If for some reason they can’t come [in August], they will come at the next available window. We are hopeful of playing in this window. I can’t say much apart from the fact that they are very professional and cooperative.”In April, the BCB had announced the schedule for India’s tour of Bangladesh: three ODIs on August 17, 20 and 23, followed by T20Is on August 26, 29 and 31. The matches were to be held in Mirpur and Chattogram.
The BCCI terminated the Kochi IPL franchise in 2011, and the parties have been involved in legal proceedings since then
ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jun-2025The BCCI has been directed to pay INR 385.50 crore to Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) and INR 153.34 crore to Rendezvous Sports World (RSW) over the termination of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala IPL franchise in 2011. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday upheld the arbitral awards made against the BCCI in 2015.The Kochi franchise, which was owned by KCPL and RSW, played one season of the IPL in 2011, finishing eighth among the ten teams. In September 2011, the BCCI terminated the franchise for allegedly breaching its terms of agreement by failing to provide a bank guarantee by the stipulated deadline, following which both parties were involved in arbitration proceedings.Related

“The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited,” Justice Riyaz I. BCCI’s dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award.”The conclusion of the learned Arbitrator namely that BCCI had wrongfully invoked the bank guarantee which amounted to a repudiatory breach of the KCPL-FA would call for no interference under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act considering that this is based on a correct appreciation of the evidence on record.”The BCCI has been granted six weeks to file an appeal.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez had a choice.
Stay on third base and risk getting plunked by a flying bat hurtling towards his body or dodge the incoming lumber and take himself off the base momentarily.
Rodriguez's survival instincts kicked in, and unfortunately, he made a critical baserunning error in the process.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Rodriguez, the ghost runner, was the tying run at second base when Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh singled to left, moving him to third.
That's when the fun, or lack therof, began for Seattle.
Outfielder Randy Arozarena struck out on a 2-2 slider, and lost control of the bat, which went flying towards Rodriguez at third. The Mariners outfielder, in his haste to avoid the flying bat, jogged off of third and was unable to get back to the bag before being doubled off.
After the game, Rodriguez told he had initially believed it was a dead play.
"After I saw the bat I thought it was going to be a dead play, and then they were going to pick up the bat and I was going to go back to third," Rodriguez said. "I got away and turned my back to the field and I heard (third base coach) Manny (Acta) yelling, ‘Get back to third.’ That’s when I got back to third."
"Honestly, at that moment I wasn’t really thinking about the game, just trying to get away from the bat coming at me. That’s what happened. That was a first for me, for sure."
Rodriguez's play comes one day after teammate Victor Robles was thrown out attempting to steal home on a 3-0 count with the bases loaded in the first inning of Tuesday's loss to New York.
The critical errors loom even larger, as Seattle, five games back in the American League West and three games back of the final wild card spot, still has an outside shot at the postseason.
Celtic moved to within two points of Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a dramatic 3-2 win over Motherwell at Parkhead on Sunday.
The Hoops needed a stoppage-time winner from Daizen Maeda, who bundled in a cross from Michel-Ange Balikwisha, to claim all three points in front of their own fans.
In fact, they had to come from 2-1 down to claim a win in the second half. Benjamin Nygren equalised after snatching the ball inside the Motherwell box, before Maeda’s winner.
They had to produce a stunning comeback, in part, because Marcelo Saracchi conceded a penalty that allowed the away side to take the lead.
Why Marcelo Saracchi should be dropped
The Uruguay international was brought into the side in place of Kieran Tierney to provide the Scottish full-back with a rest, but failed to put in a solid performance.
He attempted a challenge in the box with the wrong foot, stepping on the attacker with his left foot instead of using his right to make a block, which resulted in a penalty to Motherwell.
That came after he gave Tawanda Maswanhise too much time to put a cross in for Motherwell’s first goal in the first half, standing too far off the winger out wide.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Despite those errors for the goals, which should see him dropped from the XI, Luke McCowan was even worse than the Boca Juniors loanee in the middle of the park.
Why Luke McCowan should be dropped
Brendan Rodgers should ruthlessly ditch the Scottish central midfielder from the team after the international break because of his disappointing performance against Motherwell.
The left-footed star was put in the midfield to provide a spark and creativity in possession for the Hoops, yet he played 60 minutes without registering a shot on goal or a chance created, per Sofascore.
This shows that the former Dundee star was completely ineffective in possession for the Scottish giants, because he did not provide any sort of threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals.
The 27-year-old central midfielder’s general play throughout the match was not much better, unfortunately, as he was even worse than Saracchi with his all-round performance in and out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, Saracchi won more duels, made more defensive contributions, and completed more dribbles during a similar amount of time on the pitch.
McCowan was far too wasteful with the ball at his feet, losing possession 13 times, when you consider that he did not create a single chance for his teammates in an hour for Celtic.
It was a big chance for the central midfielder to impress, given that Rodgers now has two weeks to reflect on this performance, ahead of the next block of matches.
Unfortunately, the experienced star failed to grasp his opportunity to nail down a place in the starting XI, as he did not do enough in or out of possession to suggest that he should retain a starting berth.

Hopefully, McCowan will be able to show a better version of himself when the manager next decides to offer him a chance to play in the starting line-up.
Manchester United has been the home to countless elite-level players over the years, with the majority of whom coming during the Sir Alex Ferguson reign.
From homegrown talents to big-money additions, the Red Devils faithful truly have been blessed with a conveyor belt of talents who can get the fans off their seats.
The success of the football club as a result simply can’t be understated, with their tally of 13 Premier League titles the most of any side since the division’s formation in 1992.
However, the Red Devils are without a top-flight title since 2013, with current boss Ruben Amorim the next manager in a long list to try and end such a drought.
Whilst he was only able to guide the club to a 15th-placed finish last time around, there’s a completely different feel at the Theatre of Dreams – one of optimism after years of struggles on the pitch.
Man Utd’s current crop of world-class talents
World-class has become such a loosely used term in the modern game, with countless players undeserving of such a title compared to players in years before them.
Bruno Fernandes is a player more than deserving of such praise, especially given his performances last season, which certainly prevented United from a potential relegation battle.
The Portuguese international ended 2024/25 on a staggering 37 combined goals and assists – truly leading from the front and highlighting why he’s been handed the captain’s armband.
However, some of the pressure will no doubt have been lifted from his shoulders this season, after the £71m addition of Bryan Mbeumo from Premier League rivals Brentford.
The Cameroonian may have cost a pretty penny, but he’s already hit the ground running in Manchester, as seen by his tally of five goals and one assist in all competitions.
His tally of four Premier League goals sees him sit top of the Red Devils’ top scorer charts, but also joint-fourth in the entire division – further showcasing how impressive he’s been since his big-money transfer.
The 26-year-old wasn’t alone in joining the club for huge money during the off-season, with attacking midfielder Matheus Cunha joining Amorim’s men for a reported £62.5m.
The Brazilian has since operated alongside Mbeumo in the number ten role at Old Trafford, subsequently deserving of the world-class label alongside the Cameroonian.
Cunha may have only scored his first goal for the club last Saturday, but it’s been a long time coming, with his underlying stats showcasing the threat he’s carried in forward areas.
He currently has the highest average number of shots on target per 90 at United, whilst also completing the most dribbles per 90 – already looking well worth the money paid for his signature.
The United player who’s becoming one of the world’s best
United haven’t been alien to spending huge funds on new talents over the years, as seen by their total of around £800m spent since the summer of 2022 alone.
Many players in that time had high expectations to deliver at Old Trafford, but ultimately fell way below them, as seen by Brazilian winger Antony – who cost a staggering £86m.
He arrived at the club from Ajax alongside then-boss Erik ten Hag, but only managed a measly tally of 12 goals in 96 appearances – subsequently leaving for just £21m to join Real Betis this summer.
However, not all of their huge investments have been a disaster, with centre-back Leny Yoro already proving to be a worthwhile investment 12 months on from his arrival.
The Frenchman was only 18 at the time of his transfer from Lille, but it didn’t stop the United hierarchy from spending a reported £52m for his services.
Many raised eyebrows given the nature of the transfer fee, but the teenage sensation has wasted no time in cementing his place as a regular starter within the first-team ranks.
He’s already racked up 42 senior appearances for the Red Devils – even scoring a decisive goal in their Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon last campaign.
Amorim is certainly a huge fan of the 19-year-old, with Yoro featuring in every single Premier League game in 2025/26 to date – often partnering Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt.
Podcaster Matt Spiro has spoken about his admiration for the youngster earlier this season, subsequently labelling the teenager as one of the “best in the world”.
His comments are certainly bold, but Yoro’s stats from 2025/26 back up his claim, with the centre-back ranking in the top 20% of all players in the Premier League for aerial duels won.
He’s also made 1.8 interceptions and 1.3 tackles per 90 to date, undoubtedly playing a key role in United’s ability to win five of their last matches under Amorim.

The French sensation is also extremely comfortable in possession, as reflected in his 87% pass completion rate and tally of 2.3 long balls completed per 90.
It’s evident that Yoro has all of the tools that a centre-back needs to flourish in the modern game, but it truly is a scary thought given the fact he’s still just getting started in the professional game.
Leny Yoro for Man Utd.
He easily has another decade to grow into the men’s game and develop further – which could see United’s investment of £52m become one of the best deals in recent history.
Should he continue on such a trajectory, there’s little doubt that Yoro will be in that world-class bracket – potentially having a huge bearing on any future success at Old Trafford.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is braced to make a ruthless call on new manager Ange Postecoglou after his dreadful start to life at the City Ground, which was compounded by a surprise 3-2 loss to Danish minnows FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.
Ange Postecoglou reacts to Nottingham Forest sack rumours
Just six games into his tenure, Postecoglou is already facing reports that he could be sacked if they lose to Newcastle United this weekend.
The 60-year-old has guided Forest to four losses and two draws from his opening matches in charge, having just been appointed under a month ago, and Marinakis could ruthlessly cut ties with Postecoglou despite only just arriving.
While Forest have displayed brief flashes of brilliant, interchange attacking play, the squad is really not coping well with Postecoglou’s brand of ‘Angeball’ as they struggle to adjust to a completely new system to that of his predecessor.

Unlike Nuno’s dogged, pragmatic and counter-attacking style, Forest are tasked with playing a more front-footed, open and offensive game — and this has resulted in Forest conceding 13 goals since Postecoglou’s arrival.
They’ve also looked extremely vulnerable to set-pieces, which was on full display against Midtjylland, as chants of ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ rang around the City Ground.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Newcastle at St. James’ Park, Postecoglou sent a defiant message that he’s unfazed by the noise and solely focused on winning matches.
Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Forest could be patient with Postecoglou, but Sky Sports report that Marinakis isn’t afraid to make a cut-throat decision.
Sky Sports share Ange Postecoglou sack update out of Nottingham Forest
The broadcast giant, sharing an update via their live broadcast, says that Marinakis isn’t afraid to pull the plug on Postecoglou and could do it imminently if results continue to on a downward trajectory.
Postecoglou, if sacked after Newcastle, could break the Premier League record for shortest reign by any manager, and it would be another unwanted blotch on his CV after also making the worst start by any Forest boss for 100 years.
That being said, despite Forest’s woeful form, Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp believes it would be “crazy” for Postecoglou to go already.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has now contacted Barcelona sporting director Deco over a deal for a “real gem”, it has been revealed.
Man City maintain pressure on Arsenal with victory over Everton
Man City rose to second in the Premier League courtesy of their 2-0 victory at home against Everton at the weekend, with talisman Erling Haaland continuing his fantastic start to the season by scoring a brace.
The Norwegian, who is regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, is likely to be key to City’s chances of winning the Premier League title, with the win against the Toffees ensuring they remain three points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Gary Neville has expressed concern about the Blues’ defensive vulnerabilities, but Gianluigi Donnarumma has received plenty of plaudits since his arrival, while Nico O’Reilly has continued to impress, assisting Haaland’s opening goal on Saturday afternoon.
However, according to a report from E-Noticies, Guardiola is worried by his lack of options at left-back, having been forced to improvise by giving O’Reilly the nod in that area of the pitch.
As such, the Man City boss has now made direct contact with Barcelona sporting director Deco over a move for Alejandro Balde, who Pep has been keen on for quite some time, having tried to get a deal done back in 2023.
The City manager believes Balde, who rakes in around £28k-a-week, would be an ideal fit in his system, given his speed, ability to break the lines and tactical astuteness.
That said, it could be difficult to get a deal done, given that the 22-year-old has expressed no intention of leaving the Camp Nou, with the La Liga club viewing him as an essential part of their project going forward.

BySean Markus Clifford Oct 19, 2025 "Real gem" Balde could be solid option for Man City
The Spaniard has been a regular first-team player at Barcelona for quite some time, receiving high praise from scout Jacek Kulig for his attacking contributions during the 2022-23 campaign.
The left-back is also very comfortable in possession of the ball, as showcased by the fact he ranks in the 97th percentile for pass-completion rate per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.
Those qualities could make Balde ideal for Man City, but there are some doubts over whether he would be a necessary signing, given the start O’Reilly has made to the campaign, with Guardiola praising the young Englishman after his Golden Boy nomination.
