Timo Werner targets Lionel Messi partnership as RB Leipzig outcast sets sights on Inter Miami transfer after New York Red Bulls snub ex-Chelsea forward

Timo Werner is pushing for a move away from RB Leipzig this winter, with reports in Germany revealing a sensational interest in joining Lionel Messi at Inter Miami. The former Chelsea striker has fallen out of favour in Leipzig and sees MLS as his next destination despite rejecting a switch to the New York Red Bulls. With his future uncertain, Miami’s glamour and sporting profile appear to be drawing the German forward.

  • Werner eyes Miami move as Leipzig exit looms

The German forward's future at RB Leipzig is essentially over, and the 29-year-old is now reportedly targeting a high-profile move to Inter Miami, where he hopes to line up alongside superstar Messi. Werner has played just one minute of football this season and no longer features in Leipzig’s matchday squads, leaving a winter exit increasingly likely.

reported that Werner is especially tempted by Miami’s project and the global pull of playing with Messi, whose presence continues to reshape the MLS landscape. The glamour surrounding the club, both in sporting ambition and lifestyle appeal, is said to suit Werner and his wife Paula, making South Florida an attractive landing spot as he seeks a fresh start.

A move to MLS had already been on the table last summer, when the New York Red Bulls made inquiries through the Red Bull network. At the time, Werner remained reluctant to leave Leipzig due to his sizeable salary and the belief he could still revive his career in Germany. But his situation has deteriorated drastically, and with his contract expiring in 2026, a winter departure is now seen as essential to avoid drifting toward free agency.

  • Why New York Red Bulls plan didn't work out

Werner’s most concrete MLS opportunity collapsed when the New York Red Bulls ultimately walked away from talks, a decision explained in detail by the club’s athletic director Julian de Guzman.

Last week, De Guzman confirmed that the forward had been on the club’s radar, saying: "There have always been rumors about Werner," before stressing that any deal had to suit New York’s long-term strategy. He added: "We have to make sure it makes sense for us here in New York."

The Canadian executive made clear that Werner’s profile was highly appealing from a fan standpoint, stating: "Werner is a great name. I think the fans would have loved him. The opportunity was there, but I don't think we were 100 percent convinced that this was the right thing for New York. That's why we didn't fully commit to it."

Salary considerations also played a key role, as Werner earns a reported €10 million per year in Leipzig, while New York were unable, and ultimately unwilling, to match anywhere near that level for a Designated Player slot. The striker was similarly unwilling to reduce his wage demands to complete the move, contributing to the breakdown of discussions.

  • Why Inter Miami now appeal to Wermer

With the Red Bulls stepping aside, Werner has shifted his attention to the other side of the MLS spectrum – Inter Miami, a club defined by star power, global attention and a clear pathway to compete for trophies. Messi’s presence remains the biggest draw, with the Argentine continuing to exert a transformative influence on the club’s recruitment and profile.

Inter Miami’s roster structure for 2026 provides a plausible opening. The imminent retirements of Jordi Alba and Messi's right hand man Sergio Busquets will free up two Designated Player slots, while Rodrigo De Paul is expected to occupy one if his loan becomes permanent. That leaves one DP spot available, a rare opportunity Miami could use on a high-profile attacker like Werner.

From a sporting perspective, Werner would offer flexibility across the front line, potentially replacing Luis Suarez if he departs and giving Miami an experienced, mobile option heading into the new MLS calendar cycle in 2026. The lifestyle component also weighs heavily in Miami’s favour, with the city viewed by Werner as an ideal environment to reset his career.

How likely a move can take place?

The next steps hinge on Inter Miami’s internal evaluation and their willingness to commit a DP slot, and potentially a sizeable salary, to a striker whose performances have dipped since his Chelsea days. While Werner is eager to join Messi in Florida, the report stresses that Miami’s interest is not yet confirmed, leaving the possibility of alternative MLS suitors still open.

For Leipzig, the winter window will be decisive, and Marco Rose has already marginalised the striker, and a move abroad appears the only viable solution to avoid a stagnant final 18 months of his contract. Miami, meanwhile, must navigate a busy rebuild as they prepare for the 2026 season, with decisions looming on Suarez’s future, the DP structure, and several expiring contracts.

Shohei Ohtani Belts Two Homers, Reaches Career Milestone Quicker Than Any Player

After enduring a 10-game stretch without a home run dating back to June 2, Shohei Ohtani ended the long ball drought in a big way, belting two round-trippers in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 11-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. But getting back into the home run column is far from the only thing Ohtani achieved in Los Angeles' win.

Ohtani's second home run, a 384-foot shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, gave him 250 for his career. The Dodgers' two-way star needed just 944 career games to notch 250-plus career home runs and 150-plus stolen bases, the fewest of any player in MLB history, surpassing the previous mark set by Alex Rodriguez (977 games), according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

As Langs notes, Ohtani reached the mark even quicker, as he has technically only actually hit in 928 of his career games, but, being a two-way player, his total of 944 career games reflects those in which he's both pitched and taken at-bats as a hitter.

And while Ohtani did seem a bit relieved to be rid of the home run drought, he was more concerned with the fact that the first of his two homers allowed the Dodgers to get an early jump on the Giants.

"It did feel like I haven't hit a homer in awhile," Ohtani said after the Dodgers' victory. "In terms of the context of the two homers, I think the first one was more significant just being able to score early in the game."

Ohtani, the reigning National League MVP, now owns a .290/.385/.638 slash line with 25 home runs, 41 RBI, 71 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases in 69 games played in 2025.

Francisco Lindor Shares Update After Sustaining Pinky Toe Injury

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was left out of Thursday's lineup for the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers while he deals with an injury to his pinky toe.

Lindor told reporters that the pinky toe on his right foot is broken, but he indicated he's hopeful of avoiding a stint on the IL. As for when he'll be clear to take the field again, the shortstop said he considers himself "day-to-day" and that getting back to action will be about pain tolerance.

At present, he admitted the toe injury is causing him a significant amount of pain, but he doesn't anticipate missing more than a few days of action. Lindor noted the injury occurred during Wednesday's game when he was sliding.

"I'm day-by-day. Hopefully, I feel good enough to play sooner rather than later. We'll see. We'll take it day by day," Lindor said.

Losing Lindor for any period of time would be a big blow for the Mets. The 31-year-old is slashing .279/.353/.490 with 14 home runs, 36 RBIs and 11 stolen bases through 61 games this season.

With Lindor unavailable, Luisangel Acuña is taking over at shortstop and batting ninth for Thursday's game.

He once cost £38.5m: Newcastle plot concrete move to sign “brilliant” PL star

Newcastle United are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a Premier League rival, who’s been frozen out at his current club.

Wissa: Newcastle debut a "long time" coming

At long last, Yoane Wissa made his Newcastle debut against Burnley. The former Brentford star arrived in the summer for as much as £55m – becoming one of the club’s most expensive ever signings – only to suffer an instant injury on international duty. Now, his wait is over and he’s finally stepped out at St James’ Park.

Speaking to reporters at full-time, Wissa admitted that his debut as been a “long time” coming – telling reporters: “It’s been a long time. The last 11 weeks, I’ve learned about the team and the players.

“It’s been a long road but I’m happy in the end. It gave my goosebumps [for his name to be read out when he came on]. I’m buzzing now. It can be an excellent season because we have so many quality players.”

Eddie Howe was also pleased to see the forward, although claimed that Wissa’s still got “a lot more work to do”.

The Newcastle boss said: “He’s got a lot more work to do to get to the very best level that he can. We hope to keep him available by managing correctly.

“It’s difficult with the spell of games that we have to sort of train him and build his fitness with all the game schedule. So it’s going to be a really delicate balance for us, but hopefully we can find a solution to it.”

Meanwhile, as one arrival gets on the pitch for the first time, another could be on the way with reports now claiming that Newcastle are plotting a move to sign Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

Newcastle plotting Axel Disasi move

As reported by Caught Offside, Newcastle are now plotting a concrete move to sign Disasi from Chelsea in the January transfer window. The defender has been thrown aside by Enzo Maresca and forced to join the likes of Raheem Sterling in the club’s so-called bomb squad. Now, however, he could get the move he so desperately needs in January.

For Newcastle, a move for the out-of-favour Chelsea man would provide Howe with some vital depth as Sven Botman continues to struggle on the injury front.

The Dutchman, as talented as he is, has become somewhat of a liability in recent times thanks to his injury history. And as Malick Thiaw continues to nail down his starting place, the Magpies could do with handing him a consistent partner. That is where Disasi could come in.

Dubbed “brilliant” by Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher in 2024, Disasi will be chomping at the bit to make his mark, having not played all season at Chelsea, and Newcastle should take full advantage.

Billionaire takeover candidate makes Sheffield Wednesday decision as deadline nears

A billionaire candidate who looked at buying the club has reportedly made his decision on completing a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday, as their initial deadline nears.

Sheffield Wednesday near initial deadline

Whether it was optimistic or not, Sheffield Wednesday’s co-administrator Kris Wigfield initially set a soft deadline of December 5 to find a preferred bidder for the club. That is just one day away, however, and it seems unlikely that the Owls will have their answer in the next 24 hours.

Instead, it’s been a frustrating week. The club has been dealt an additional six-point deduction thanks to the lingering consequences of Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership and must already turn their focus towards Championship relegation and a campaign in League One next season.

After a decision that only adds salt to their wounds, Wednesday will hope to see some progression regarding their takeover sooner rather than later.

On that front, several rumours have emerged about a number of interested candidates and one report even claimed earlier this week that some parties may choose to put a joint bid together.

It would be quite the move to match the Owls’ £30m valuation, but whether that move is deemed acceptable by Begbies Traynor remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, reports have also claimed that Mike Ashley has already seen one offer rejected for the club, having fallen below Sheffield Wednesday’s valuation. The former Newcastle United owner is one of interested candidates, albeit one who is yet to match other bidders.

However, the same can’t be said for Anders Holch Povlsen, who has dealt those at Hillsborough a frustrating blow with his latest verdict on buying the club.

Povlsen makes Sheffield Wednesday takeover decision

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, as relayed by The Star, Povlsen is not among the final candidates to buy Sheffield Wednesday. The Dane may have taken a look at the club, but has decided against putting his name in the hat ahead of the Owls’ crucial decision.

For those at Hillsborough, his interest would certainly have been welcomed. Povlsen already owns Midtjylland and a Forbes profile claimed his estimated networth was $11.3 billion (£8bn) in 2022.

The 53-year-old inherited a majority stake in ASOS and is reported to be the largest individual private landowner in the UK thanks to his land in the Scottish Highlands. So, to say that money is not an issue would be a major understatement.

Alas, it’s not just his money that made Povlsen an attractive takeover candidate before he decided against a move. The Dane also ticks the box for experience in the world of football – something other rumoured candidates do not have. In many ways, he was the ideal man for the job, but Wednesday must now look elsewhere.

Once valued at £100m: Leicester now hold strong interest in “special” striker

Leicester City now hold a strong interest in signing a “special” striker in the January transfer window, as they look to recover from a difficult start to the season.

Foxes still within touching distance of play-offs despite slow start

After being relegated from the Premier League last season, Leicester would’ve been hoping for an instant return to the top flight, but as we approach the half-way stage of the Championship season, they are still languishing in mid-table.

However, there is very little separating a number of clubs in the Championship, with the Foxes still just three points off the play-off places, meaning promotion is still very much a realistic goal, and Marti Cifuentes’ side are unbeaten in December thus far.

That said, some new additions in the January transfer window could boost Cifuentes’ side’s chances of promotion, and the manager is currently lacking top-quality options at centre-forward.

Midfielder Jordan James is Leicester’s top scorer in the Championship this season, having netted five goals, with Jordan Ayew finding the back of the net just three times in his opening 18 games.

As such, signing a new striker is on the agenda, and the Foxes are now showing strong interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson, who is currently on loan at Serie A side AS Roma.

However, with the once £100m-rated forward’s spell at the Italian club not going to plan, Brighton are set to make a decision on his future this winter, and a number of clubs are lining up for his signature.

Everton and Celtic are named as potential suitors, with the Irishman’s camp now assessing their options, and a move to the King Power Stadium could be on the cards, with Leicester prepared to take him.

"Special" Ferguson needs to get career back on track

In many ways it is surprising the 21-year-old’s career has panned out the way it has, scoring just one goal in ten Serie A games on loan at Roma, given that he exhibited some very promising signs at Brighton.

Indeed, the 26-time Ireland international scored a combined 12 Premier League goals across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, which is an impressive feat, considering how young he was at the time.

During his time working under Roberto De Zerbi, the youngster also received high praise from Jamie Carragher, who said: “I think that lad he has got up front, I think he’s pretty special. He is only going to get better with him as his manager.”

Aston Villa & Emery now very keen on signing £35m striker

Aston Villa are now very interested in signing a “magnificent” striker, amid a major update on his future ahead of the January transfer window.

Villa eyeing striker as Emery drops Watkins update

Ollie Watkins got off to a slow start to the campaign, scoring just one goal in the Premier League prior to the brace against Brighton, and Unai Emery has now opened up about a potential reason for the dip in form, stating the striker has been struggling injury-wise.

Emery said: ‘He has a small pain in his knee from last year when we started the season in August,’

“Now he is feeling the same pain. He is not feeling 100 per cent and we are trying to manage it with him. We are trying to get to the stage where he is completely without pain – and through this, to feel better again and have the confidence to score.”

The England international may be under pressure to continue performing ahead of January, however, given that the Villans are now lining up a move for a new striker, with it recently being revealed that Emery is a huge fan of Brentford striker Igor Thiago.

There has now been a new update on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Thiago, with a report from Caught Offside revealing they are very interested in signing the centre-forward, who is highly likely to leave Brentford during the upcoming transfer window.

There could be competition for the Brazilian’s signature, however, with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United also particularly keen to snap him up, after scouting him closely.

A deal may not break the bank either, with the interested clubs looking in to getting a deal done for a fee of around €35m – €40m (£31m – £35m).

Aston Villa now make contact to sign "wonderful" midfielder who would cost £0

The Villans have made an approach to sign a highly sought-after central midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Dec 2, 2025 Thiago could be "magnificent" signing for Aston Villa

The 24-year-old continued his fine form as Brentford defeated Burnley 3-1 at the weekend, bagging a brace, and manager Keith Andrews was very impressed with his performance, saying: “[Igor] has been magnificent. He was quiet in the first half. It was down to us too, not giving him enough service, and the opposition was denying him the space and opportunity.”

“But I felt he could impose himself a little more in the game, and he did exactly that in the second half.”

The Brentford star now has 11 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, the second-highest number behind Erling Haaland.

As such, a fee of around £35m could be an absolute steal for Thiago, and Villa should definitely make a January move.
